From the author, Jesse Fink:
‘On this day 50 years ago Bon Scott played his first official concert with AC/DC. To mark the occasion I’ve released Bon: Notes from the Highway, a companion piece to my 2017 book Bon: The Last Highway. Why’s Bon important? AC/DC is the biggest rock band in the world; their album Back in Black is the third-biggest selling ever in the United States behind Michael Jackson and Eagles; and most of all Bon, for me, is the power behind those four letters in the band’s logo. His life, his image, his mythology, suffuses everything AC/DC does. They would be nothing without him. Yet he only lived till the age of 33 when his body was found in the back of a car in East Dulwich, London. I have continued to investigate his death and believe the truth can finally be told.’
About the book:
‘Bon Scott was a gifted lyricist and composer of melodies. Just a natural. No one could turn a phrase like Bon… just genius use of double entendre and innuendo. Completely witty and confident. I’ve always been fascinated with Bon. His voice, songwriting, prowess as a frontman… the whole thing. Obviously, dying young can seem to deify most rock stars, but that’s not really the case with Bon. He didn’t carry himself like a complicated, tortured genius, but a fireball powerhouse who lived life to the hilt. People like him are the most influential to rock ‘n’ roll musicians because he was frighteningly real.’
– Charlie Starr, Blackberry Smoke
‘Bon was one of the greatest rock singers in the history of popular music. He was a charismatic performer who lived the life.’
– Phil Carson, senior vice-president, Atlantic Records
When it was published in 2017, Jesse Fink’s titanic biography of Bon Scott, Bon: The Last Highway, became an international sensation. Fans have been clamouring for more to Bon’s story and Bon: Notes from the Highway abundantly delivers. It’s a collection of material not contained in the original book and explores in greater detail the most significant relationship Bon had with a woman during his life: Silver Smith. Fink’s full interviews with Silver are published for the first and only time.
Fink also has a heated encounter with Peter Perrett of The Only Ones and discovers important new information about Perrett’s late friend, Alistair Kinnear, and Kinnear’s involvement in what happened to Bon on the night he died. It draws a riveting close to the pioneering investigation Fink has led into Bon’s death, confirming his original findings: that Bon died from combining alcohol and heroin.
The 226-page book features memories of Bon from Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony (Van Halen); the late Paul Raymond, Paul Chapman and Pete Way (UFO); Dave Meniketti and the late Joey Alves (Y&T); the late Scott Kempner (The Dictators); Kenny Soule (Nantucket); Stefan Kaufmann (Accept); Brad Sinsel (TKO); Jeff Carlisi (38 Special); K. K. Downing (Judas Priest); and many more.
Released 50 years after Bon joined AC/DC in 1974, Bon: Notes from the Highway leaves no stone unturned in Fink’s quest to understand Bon, the real man. As he did with Bon: The Last Highway, Fink has done it again with Bon: Notes from the Highway. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the definitive biography of the AC/DC legend and the final instalment of Fink’s AC/DC trilogy.
