Rock, Heavy, and Eclectic: Tesla’s Signature Sound Shines in Waterloo, NY

Sep 15, 2024

Get ready to crank up the volume, because I'm about to take you on a wild ride through a hard rock journey that spans decades! You’ve heard the names—Montrose, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Kiss, Boston, Van Halen, Y&T—American rock legends that paved the way for countless bands. But there’s one name that stands out, especially as we rolled into the 80s, and that name is *Tesla*.

Now, if you’re thinking Tesla is just another hair band from that era, pump the brakes! These guys are no fleeting trend—they’re the real deal, a band with serious chops that’s stood the test of time. I’ve been a fan since 1986 when I first saw them on stage, opening for the one and only David Lee Roth during the *Eat'em and Smile* tour. They were fresh off the release of their debut album *Mechanical Resonance*, and let me tell you, when they launched into "Modern Day Cowboy," they proved they weren’t just another flash in the pan. Their energy? Electric. Their attitude? Pure rock ‘n roll.

Fast forward to 2024, and Tesla is still firing on all cylinders, proving why they’ve earned their place among rock’s greats. These guys have weathered every musical trend, continuing to release new tracks, touring relentlessly, and winning over new fans, whether they’re headlining or sharing the stage.

So, picture this: September 14th—my birthday, no less—at Del Lago Casino in Waterloo, NY. Along with Via Screamer and our spouses, we witnessed Tesla deliver an unforgettable performance. The night kicked off with “Rock Me to the Top,” setting the tone with raw, unrelenting energy. From there, the hits kept coming—“Modern Day Cowboy” brought a wave of nostalgia, while “Hang Tough” reminded everyone why these guys were never just another 80s band.

They even treated us to a killer cover of the James Gang’s “Walk Away,” before diving into newer material like “Forever More.” But it was classics like “Heaven’s Trail (No Way Out),” “Changes,” and “Paradise” that really had the crowd singing along. Jeff Keith’s vocals were spot on, and any doubts about his live performance? Completely erased.

The emotional depth of “What You Give” and “Song and Emotion” added layers to the show, showcasing the band’s versatility. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, they pulled out “Love Song,” and the room erupted. “Little Suzi” kept the energy high as the set drew to a close, but not before Tesla returned for an encore that ended on a high note with a rousing rendition of “Signs.”

The musicianship was stellar, the setlist was perfectly crafted, and Jeff Keith sounded fantastic. Forget those over-compressed iPhone videos—he absolutely nailed it live. Tesla are a killer band, and their music is timeless.

What makes Tesla so special? It’s their sound. It’s rockin’, heavy, eclectic, and insanely catchy. Unlike so many others, they’ve never been a knockoff of another band. Sure, you can hear their influences, but Tesla forged a sound all their own. They’re timeless, a band that’s carved out their place in rock history.

In my humble opinion, Tesla should never be forgotten or written off in the annals of rock. They deserve to be celebrated for delivering consistently killer hard rock, with a few extra surprises sprinkled in along the way. So, if you haven’t given them a listen recently, do yourself a favor. These guys are the real deal, and they’re still bringing it like it’s 1986 all over again.
